Cole Powers Beacons to Friday Split

EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Ashlee Cole continued her incredible season on Friday, hitting a pair of home runs and breaking NCU's single-season RBI record as the Beacons split a double-header with the University of Great Falls. UGF took the first game, 2-1 in eight innings and NCU claimed the night-cap, 6-5.

Cole has now reached base safely via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 20 consecutive games, setting a school record. She has also upped her NCU-record and CCC-leading homer total to 14.  Four RBIs broke her tie with Parker Fritter and gives her 37 on the season.

Cole's bomb in the sixth inning of game-one tied the contest after Great Falls had scored in the fifth when Kyra Dorvall came home on a double by Chloe Cross.

The game remained tied after regulation and the Argonauts were able to pull out the victory after scoring an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning.

Keeley Van Blaricom (11-4) went the distance for the Argos, allowing just three hits and striking out four batters. Katie Walker (4-11) took the loss for NCU despite also allowing just one earned run.

Van Blaricom and Alex Lowry posted three hits apiece in the win. Cole was 2-for-4 in the loss for the Beacons.

Great Falls once again took an early lead in the second game, scoring in the first inning on a Van Blaricom sacrifice fly. The Beacons responded well in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs. Kelsey Hansen had an RBI single, a run came in on a passed ball and then with two runners on board, Cole crushed a shot over the left field fence to make it a 5-1 Beacon lead.

Both teams posted single runs in the third inning and UGF began to chip away with another run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but NCU was able to hold on for the 6-5 victory.

Janieve Boyles (4-11) pitcked up the complete-game victory for the Beacons, striking out one batter and scattering 12 hits. Three pitchers split time for Great Falls with starter Shelby Abeyta (4-6) suffering the loss. Van Blaricom put the final touches on an all-around strong day allowing just one hit over the final 3.2 innings while striking out three more NCU hitters.

The Beacons (15-33, 9-17 CCC) will close out the regular season on Saturday as they play host to Carroll College at 11:00 am. Great Falls (22-14, 12-10) will be in Salem to take on Corban University at the same time.
