Beacons Drop One, Suspend Another

EUGENE, Ore. – Good Friday turned into a wet Friday late in the afternoon, forcing Northwest Christian and The College of Idaho to suspend the second game of a scheduled double-header in the ninth inning, tied 10-10. The Yotes had won the first game of the afternoon, 7-1 to take a one-game lead for fourth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

The Beacons never got their footing in the first game, causing eight errors as they surrendered two runs in the third and five runs in the fourth inning. Jill Suratt (4-9) had a good outing in the circle for NCU, allowing eight hits over her complete-game while striking out five batters. All seven runs were scored as unearned.

The Beacons had seven hits of their own, including a 3-for-3 day at the plate for Kaeli Massetto (pictured). Addy Hoskins and Chelsea Roberts each had a pair of hits for the Beacons with Roberts collecting her first career extra-base hit with a third-inning leadoff double. She later scored on a Hoskins hit for NCU's sole run.

Courtney Ellis led the C of I, hitting 3-for-4 while Katie Rowe batted 2-for-3. Cortni Pena (11-9) picked up the win allowing seven hits over seven innings. She walked one batter but did not record a strikeout.

A wild second game saw the Beacons rally from a 4-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning. After the Yotes scored two more in the top of the fifth, NCU rang up five across the plate, taking a 9-6 lead.

The College of Idaho came back with a four-run seventh inning and were looking to end the game in the bottom of the seventh when Parker Bonife crushed a no-doubt shot over the left field wall, tying the game at 10-10. After a scoreless eighth inning, the Yotes were batting in the top of the ninth with two out and a runner on first base when the skies opened.

Bonife was hitting 3-for-4 at the time of the suspension with three runs and five RBI. Although the statistics won't officially count until the game is completed, the five runs batted in place her at 77 for her career. Cassie Bishop holds the Beacon school record with 78 RBI in her career.

For the Yotes, Alexis Macias was hitting 4-for-5 with three RBI and a triple while four other players had multiple hits.

No date has been set for the teams to complete the second game, which could become a crucial piece to the 2015 CCC playoff picture. NCU (9-24, 6-9) is currently one game behind The College of Idaho (16-21, 7-8) for fourth place in the conference, which sends its top four teams to the postseason.

The Yotes will continue their trek in Salem on Saturday, taking on No. 24 Corban while NCU will stay home to host Eastern Oregon University at 11 a.m. For up-to-the-minute updates on Saturday morning for any possible game delays or relocations due to the current weather system, follow @GoBEACONS on twitter.
