EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University softball team split their final double-header of the season on Saturday, losing the first game to Northwest University 7-3 before coming back to win in extra innings in the second game, 6-5. The win helped NCU secure a fifth-place finish in the CCC for just the second time in school history.
Â
GAME ONEÂ
Northwest went to work early, scoring three runs in the first and four runs in the second to establish a 7-0 lead. The Beacons chipped away with two runs in the third inning thanks to three consecutive doubles off the bats of seniors
Randi Kostner,
Jill Suratt, and
Addy Hoskins.
Â
NCU tacked on another run in the sixth inning on an RBI double from
Parker Bonife, but that would be all the Beacons could get across the plate.
Â
Kelli Peckham (7-11) got the win for the Beacons, allowing three runs on ten hits over a complete game effort while striking out seven batters. Suratt took the loss, allowing six runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Katie Walker closed out the final 5.2 innings for the Beacons, allowing just one earned run while striking out four batters.
Â
Suratt, Hoskins, and
Taylor Medley had two hits apiece for the Beacons who tied a school record with six doubles in the game.
Â
Darian Godfrey and Savannah Rush each had three-run home runs to pace the Eagle victory.
Â
GAME TWOÂ
It ended up being a freshman that came through with the big hit on senior day as
Anita Singh slapped a walk-off sacrifice fly to left field for the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Â
Just like the first game, the Eagles took the early lead. After scoring two runs in the first, a second Savannah Rush bomb was part of a three-run second inning and Northwest held a 5-0 lead. It would be the end of the scoring for NU, however, as junior
Sarah Lawhorn (2-0) came in to own the final five innings, allowing just four hits with one strikeout.
Â
The Beacons slowly chipped away at the lead getting RBI doubles from senior
Torie O'Keeffe and Singh in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
In the fifth inning,
Ashlee Cole had an RBI bloop single that landed right on the left field line to score Suratt, making it 5-3. In the sixth, O'Keeffe came through again with another RBI double, scoring
Katelin Downes to make it 5-4.
Â
Cole then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, setting up the eighth inning heroics for Singh.
Â
Hoskins, Cole, Singh and O'Keeffe each had two hits in the game to lead the Beacons.
Â
Kierston Perry (5-10) took the loss for NU, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out five NCU hitters.
Â
The Beacons end the season at 13-33 including a 10-18 mark in conference. NU was 13-23, 9-19 in the CCC.Â
