Offense Tripped Up By Boxers

EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University softball team had a difficult afternoon at the plate on Wednesday afternoon, collecting just seven hits in a double-header sweep by Pacific University, 3-0 and 5-0.

Pacific (16-8) completes the season sweep over the Beacons (7-21) who also dropped a double header in Forest Grove earlier this season.

Boxer starter Marissa Reichard (7-4) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of game one and finished off a complete-game two-hit shutout behind four strikeouts.

After a three-run first inning, Jillyn Suratt (3-7) matched her pitch-for-pitch, giving up just four hits the rest of the way while striking out six batters. She allowed just two earned runs.

Ashlee Cole provided NCU's first hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the no-hitter. A few batters later Breanne Johnson added a pinch-hit single.

Pacific again got off to a quick start in the second game, posting a pair of first inning runs on NCU starter Johnson (0-3). They would add a run in the third and two insurance scores in the top of the seventh.

Jessica Hotaling got the start and went three innings allowing three hits. Allie Sims (7-3) went the final four innings and allowed just two hits to secure the victory.

The Beacon hitting was spread out in game two with Suratt, Addy Hoskins, Cole, and Kaeli Massetto getting single while Parker Bonife crushed a line-drive double off the top of the left-center field wall in the second inning.

NCU will be back in action on Friday, resuming Cascade Collegiate Conference action in Kirkland, Washington as they take on Northwest University at 12:00 pm.
