Beacons Swept by Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The NCU softball team collected 19 hits during Wednesday's double-header, but couldn't come out with the timely ones they needed as they were swept by Pacific, 7-2 and 7-4.

Doubles from Taylor Medley, Breanne Johnson and Janieve Boyles sparked the Beacon offense in game one, but it was all for naught as the Boxers had four extra-base hits and capitalized on four NCU miscues.

NCU got on the board first as Randi Kostner scored off an error. Then the Boxers got things going in the bottom of the first with a four-run inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Ashley Mitchell.

Johnson (0-2) started and took the loss for the Beacons, allowing six earned runs over 1.1 innings of work. Boyles closed out the game with 4.2 inning, striking out two and not allowing an earned run. Medley finished the game batting 2-for-3 with the team's lone RBI.

The Beacons were first to score again in the second game, eventually building a 4-0 lead. Kostner scored on a Parker Bonife single in the first inning and then in the second, Katelin Downes brought in Madi Novelli on a double. Downes then scored on a Jill Suratt single, making it 3-0.

The final NCU run came in the third when Parker Bonife blasted her second home run of the season.

Pacific got two runs back in the third inning and then in the fifth starter Katie Walker got into trouble with the Boxers eventually posting five runs to take the lead for good.

Sarah Lawhorn came in to throw the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run in her first action of the season. Walker (1-3) ended up taking the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings while striking out three.

Suratt finished the second game batting 3-for-4 while Bonife and Ashlee Cole had two hits apiece.

Northwest Christian (1-7) returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Portland for the Northwest Cup. They will face Carroll College and Lewis & Clark on Saturday and then St. Martin's and British Columbia on Sunday.
