EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University men's soccer team ended a five-game scoreless streak on Friday afternoon, but weren't able to come away with the victory, falling to No. 20 Rocky Mountain College, 5-1.
Â
The teams were locked in a close battle throughout the afternoon with the Bears coming ahead with a 12-10 advantage in shots. RMC was able to do more with their shot attempts, however, scoring on half of their shots-on-goal.
Â
The Bears got on the board first in the 9th minute when Nico Cordero scored off a cross from Matthew Thomas. After a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, Thomas assisted on another, this time helping Tiago Ewald score and Rocky took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Â
The visitors made it 4-0 in the 55th minute when Nolan Sherwood took the ball at midfield and dribbled down the right side before sending in a shot to the left side of the net.
Â
NCU answered, and got their first goal since September 11th as
Tito Gomez connected with
Sergio Maldonado (pictured) on a give-and-go in transition. Maldonado fired home a rocket from ten yards out, straight down the pipe for his third score of the season.
Â
Rocky added their fifth and final goal with just a few minutes to play as Chasen Lashure connected off a through-ball from Ben Teasdale.
Â
The Bears (11-1, 7-1 CCC) maintain their grip on first-place in the CCC, setting up a showdown with undefeated Corban University tomorrow afternoon in the NAIA Game of the Week.
Â
Northwest Christian (1-9-1, 0-6) took ten shots in the game including seven from Maldonado. The Beacons stay home to host The College of Idaho on Saturday.Â
