Home Slate Closes With 3-0 Loss

EUGENE, Ore. – Northwest University kept hopes alive for a share of the CCC championship, knocking off NCU 3-0 on Saturday in the final home game for the Beacons. It was also the final game for seniors Max Torres, Josh Bramlett, Chase Pearson, Ryan Herriage, Vladyslav Boloban and Shaq Poston, who were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Northwest out-shot the Beacons 18-11 and had 13 shots-on-goal to just five for NCU. The Eagles got on the board with what was the eventual game-winner in the 40th minute. Odason Pelogi send a ball down the sideline to Jacob Weaver who one-timed a cross to Branson Corwin. Corwin buried a five-yard blast into the net and NU was ahead, 1-0.

Corwin struck again in the second half, knocking in a 15-yard blast out of the air off a long volley from Hunter Madich. Then, in the 89th minute, another insurance goal came in as Taylor Young found the back of the nylon off a pass from Kyle Zimmerman.

The Beacons had just five shots on goal, but had numerous opportunities to make something happen in their offensive third. Each time, however, the attack was swallowed up by the NU backline. After the match, Head Coach Brett Bentley said, "I'm really disappointed in the result tonight. It is an unfortunate example of our season as a whole. We have done a good job in the defensive third and the midfield and then we can't capitalize in the final third. We played straight up with Northwest tonight but the biggest difference is they finished their chances and we didn't."

Daniel Christenson lowered his CCC-best Goals Against Average a little more with his shutout, making five saves. In his final home game, Torres made nine saves for the Beacons.

Northwest (14-3, 10-3 CCC) remains in second place in the CCC but keeps pace with first-place Concordia who was also victorious on Saturday. The Cavaliers clinched the No. 1 overall seed, but the Eagles can still play their way into a tie for the CCC championship with a victory next weekend, coupled with a CU loss. NU will lost Warner Pacific next Saturday.

The Beacons (4-11-2, 3-9-1 CCC) will attempt to tie the best CCC record in school history next Saturday when they travel to Klamath Falls to take on Oregon Tech. NCU went 4-9-1 in conference play during the 2010 season.
