Beacons Lose Physical CCC Opener

CALDWELL, Idaho  – The Beacons men's soccer team doubled their scoring output for the young season but it wouldn't be enough as Northwest Christian University fell to The College of Idaho on Tuesday afternoon, 3-2.

NCU was outshot 21-7 in a contest marred by 39 fouls and five cards. Head Coach Brett Bentley said, "It was a very disappointing loss tonight, considering how influential the officials were in the outcome of the game. Defensively we were content with dropping into our half which paid off for us today. Whenever they tried to come forward with the ball we were able to disrupt their play. They wanted to work side-to-side and we limited that."

NCU took the early lead, getting on the board in the 16th minute. Steve Jusko sent a cross from the left side into the box to Nick Peloquin who punched in a header to the near post for a 1-0 lead.

The Yotes tied things up in the 35th minute on a give-and-go play inside the 18-yard box. Nicko Moreno was the beneficiary of a pass from Brandon Smith, driving the ball into the upper corner to make is 1-1. "We've been talking a lot about tackling," said Bentley, "and unfortunately two guys didn't tackle and they were able to break us down to create a 1v1 chance."

The game remained knotted up through the end of the first half and well into the second. The Yotes, however, finally made noise in the 72nd minute, forcing a foul inside the box for a penalty kick. Yan Gioseffi got the call and he answered to give C of I a 2-1 lead.

College of Idaho extended the lead just nine minutes later as Moreno posted his second goal off the game, taking a pass from Joao Cardoso and hitting a strike into the bottom corner of the net from 15-yards out.

C of I led 3-1 with less than 10 minutes to go but the Beacons, looking for their first-ever win in Idaho, responded. A foul in the box in the 83rd minute gave NCU a penalty kick - but Yote keeper Colin Benham-Marin snuffed Adam Crossingham's drive to the left post and then made a diving save of a rebound shot from Ian Hawksford.

Benham-Marin had to leave the game in the 87th minute, after a foul as the last line of defense, resulting in a red card. On the ensuing free kick, Austin Crook (pictured) bent a ball into the upper right corner to make it 3-2. NCU, with a man advantage, controlled the possession over the final three minutes, but did not get another shot on goal.

The College of Idaho (1-4, 1-0 CCC) wins their first game of the season and jump into first-place in the CCC. The Beacons continue to search for their first victory, sitting at 0-4, 0-1 in the conference.

NCU will return to action on Saturday as Cascade Collegiate Conference action continues against #12 ranked Concordia University. Kick off for that game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
