Beacons Shutout OIT in Overtime

EUGENE, Ore.  – Freshman Sergio Maldonado broke a scoreless tie in the second minute of overtime and junior Max Torres (pictured) recorded the shutout as NCU defeated Oregon Tech on Friday, 1-0 at Mike Kelly Field.

The Beacons (2-14, 2-10 CCC) held Oregon Tech to just three shots on goal in the match, outshooting the Owls 16-6. Both defenses held tough through 90 scoreless minutes, forcing the extra period.

Then, at the 91:41 mark, Isaiah Blake fired in a screamer from 18 yards out which was deflected by OIT keeper Loren Jessen. Maldonado was there to collect the rebound, punching in the game-winner to give the Beacons their second consecutive home victory.

Blake led the Beacons with five shots including a pair of shots-on-goal while Maldonado finished with four shots and two on-frame. The shutout was the first of the season for the Beacons and first for Torres, who finished with three saves.

Oregon Tech (5-11, 4-8) had shots-on-goal from Colton Grytness, Brady Ulen, and Adam Soto. The Owls only solid scoring chance came in the 21st minute when Torres made a pair of brilliant saves on rapid-fire scoring attempts from Ulen and Soto. Jessen finished the night with seven saves.

NCU will turn right around and face The College of Idaho on Saturday at 4:00 pm. The Yotes come in a 4-12, including a 4-8 mark in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
