Seniors Give Beacons Historic Win

EUGENE, Ore. – Seniors Chris Wilgus and Denton Brown (pictured) scored goals on Saturday to lead the Northwest Christian University men's soccer team to their seventh victory of the season, setting a number of milestones in the process. The Beacons topped Oregon Tech, 2-1, for their first ever win against the Owls.

NCU finishes their season at 7-10-1, including a 4-9-1 mark in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Not only did the Beacons establish new records for victory and CCC victories, but the win combined with a 9-0 loss for Corban University, bumped Northwest Christian out of the cellar for the first time in school history. The Beacons end the year in seventh place, followed by Corban at 3-10-1.

Wilgus got the first goal across for the Beacons in the 7th minute of the game. With NCU penetrating the box, senior Aaron Dilla sent a pass from the right to Wilgus, who tapped in the score past the Oregon Tech keeper.

Brown came up with what became the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute, giving Northwest Christian a 2-0 lead. Freshman Jun Yoon sent a perfect corner kick into the middle of the box where Denton fired home the score out of the air before the keeper had time to react.

Oregon Tech made it close in the second half off the foot of their own senior, Dylan Durrell. The midfielder got the ball along the left sideline and was one-on-one against the last defender. Durrell moved into the box and fired home the score into the left back of the net.

The Beacons finished the afternoon out-shooting the Owls 15-10 while holding a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Oregon Tech (6-10-2, 4-8-2 CCC) had six goalie saves for freshman Loren Jessen (Springfield HS). OIT ends their season just one point ahead of the Beacons in the CCC standings.
